If you have children, I’m sure you know that they are more than interested in your gardening. Well, that is until they hit the teen years and then they are pretty much less than interested in anything that has to do with anything, but their social life. Anyway, while my oldest son was young, he would follow me around the garden and love to get dirty with me.

His favorite thing to do was look for worms in the garden and collect them all inside a large soda bottle. Not to mention, the one day when he decided the worms were hungry and fed them a bunch of ants.. it turned out to be a worm massacre. As my children got older, we developed an activity that I thought I would share with you readers.

Many love flowers because of their beautiful colors and wonderful scent. Flowers make the best gifts, and for anyone who passionate about them, you know they can cheer you up in an instant. However; did you know that there are several different emotional health benefits that we receive from flowers?

Flowers affect our emotional health in a few different ways. They released happy chemicals from the brain, causing an instant improvement in our emotions. These chemicals are released when the brain is triggered from the pleasant smell flowers give off. Give it a try. Smell that bouquet of flowers or take a trip out to the garden. Do you notice that improvement in your mood shortly after taking a whiff?

Herbs as Houseplants

Herbs make great houseplants. All you need is a sunny windowsill and a few pots and you can have a thriving and edible indoor garden!

Urban Farms Could Be Coming to Dorchester

When you think of Dorchester you probably think concrete jungle rather than sprawling farms or even green gardens, but that may be changing soon.

Boston’s Urban Agriculture Project is considering taking over several vacant lots in South Dorchester and turning them into urban farms. The crops grown there would be sold in the city and given to food pantries, homeless shelters and needy families. ReVision Urban Farm and City Growers would run the farms, which would be located on Tucker Street and Glenway Street. Final approval is pending and would require the Zoning Commission to give the project the okay.

Blooming Literature

Books and gardening have a few things in common. They both stimulate your imagination and they can both be magical!

The Sharon Book Club brought literature to life in a whole new way. They joined the Friends of the Sharon Library for “Books in Bloom” an exhibit of floral arrangements based on their favorite books. Some of the exhibits included a vegetable arrangement in honor of “Peter Rabbit” and floral displays to compliment popular books like “Goodnight Moon”.

Leafers rejoice - Boston Autumn leaves have arrived!

If you are one of the many people who travel to see the "changing of the leaves", the process is starting and soon all of New England will be glowing with the red, orange, and yellow that makes Fall such a special time of the year. While a recent story in the SFGate indicates that leaves around the world are changing later, that is not the case for Boston and the article should not stop all of your sightseeing plans - at least this year.

Autumn leaf color is an interesting phenomenon that affects green leaves of many deciduous trees and other plants where, during a few weeks in the autumn season, they change colors and fall. The phenomenon is commonly called fall colors and autumn colors, while the expression fall foliage usually connotes the viewing of a tree or forest whose leaves have undergone the change.

Blazing Star

Of all of the American wildlife flowers available for cultivation, the blazing star is one of the most unique. Also known as the button snakeroot or the gay-feather, it is a feathery, purple ornamental plant that’s often used in flower arrangements. It has these incredible spiky petals that make it look like it belongs more in a Little Mermaid film underwater than above ground, and they definitely don’t look like the kind of flowers you’d want scattered to walk upon for a romantic evening; but they sure are cool-looking.
